ERIKA’S STORY IN HER OWN WORDS
I was always a social introvert, I still am. I loved to ready, write, play outside with friends and in nature. I was endlessly curious and enjoyed art like drawing, dancing and painting. I always wished I could sing, but to my own dismay, never developed that talent.
I was a very sensitive kid growing up. I had a few close friends to play with, but also loved being alone daydreaming under the lilac tree in my backyard or enjoying Disney movies filled with princesses and faeries. Anything fantasy I was into and that still hasn’t changed.
At the age of 16, while writing in my journal one evening I heard the call of God and naturally freaked out. I decided to take my time and ignore that call, instead immersing myself in boys, friends, partying and drama – not the theater kind.
While my childhood had beautiful moments, like catching frogs with my older brother in the water retention pond behind my house, it was also filled with conflict, negativity and emotional burdens from growing up in a broken family riddled with fighting, addiction, depression, narcissism and abandonment.
My mother, though she has a huge heart, was very sensitive, damaged and emotional. Her struggles with depression and addiction being a single mother and a full time student wore on her, though she did the best she could. Our constant moving around took a toll on my brother and I, moving every 6-12 months. My father’s house was the constant, but even then full of struggle, anger and conflict. We weren’t spared from much and expected to please and keep quiet, mind our place.
This lasted through college, and with no therapeutic support, I had no idea the way I was living wasn’t healthy. I was an insomniac, developed food intolerances, struggled with bulimia and diagnosed depression and panic attacks. After college I developed chronic lower back pain, and in my mid to late 20s had days where I couldn’t get off the couch, the pain was so severe.
By this time, my older brother was struggling with his own demons, depression turned to heroin use.
What got me through was unwavering support of my friends coupled with seeking help. I began to realize my people pleasing ways, un-forgiveness and co-dependency were trapping me in a cage of fear and self loathing.
I began to heal. I sought help. I wrote in my journal, I cried, I laughed, I forgave and began to let go. I moved forward and stepped consciously into my path of becoming a healer. Out of all this darkness, I found my path – my purpose.
